Health care policy refers to a laid down action plan that is aimed at guiding each and every process of decision making and the implementation as far as the issues of health are concerned. Such policies must be formulated in such a way that every aspect of the health care is taken care of. Women for instance, are rated as the most consumers of health services. This is because of the roles they have to play in as far as their gender and sex are concerned. They are known for instance to demand a lot of health care in as far as their reproductive system is concerned. Apart from that reason, they are known to possess a greater life span hence more demands for healthcare. In addition, the women are usually likely to be found working in area with so many unfavorable conditions and at a very low pay. Their health requirements are in a very wide spectrum (Leiyu, 34). Considering all those factors and many others, therefore, there is a need for some special policies to cater for their wide health needs disparities. A good example of such a policy is the disabled women health care policy.

            In our society we are living today, very little information has been put to the knowledge of people concerning the health care given to the disabled women. There is a very big difference between a disabled woman and a disabled man. Actually, according to the statistics there are more disabled women than men are in the society. Due to such a difference, and also due to the fact that they play a greater role in the society, there was a need for a policy to take care of such group of women. Moreover, at one point it was discovered that disabled women on being screened, had very slim opportunities of receiving medical care as compared to the other women who were not disabled (Reid, 98). That is why the policy was developed. It is so unfortunate that even them that got an opportunity of getting treatment almost all of them were never satisfied with the services.

            Further, a research that was done in the year 1992 showed that in many occasion, women with disabilities were excluded in the process of medical care admission. It should be noted that such a thing was very risky considering that out of the total population of women there is a 21% percent of women disabled. The policy formulation was justified by the fact that most of these disabled women were found to be living under very poor conditions. In addition, it was discovered that due to their disabilities, they were the most vulnerable to very deadly diseases. Therefore, the policy was targeted to exhaustively deal with their problem. Access to any healthcare dictates that everyone has a right efficiently to and effectively gains access to health care (Peloso, 123). Unfortunately, this was not the case of the disabled, since the policy was aimed at making it possible for the disabled women to gain access to health care in an equal manner as the ones that are not disabled.

            The policy was aimed at increasing chances of the disabled women to gain access to health care. In addition, it was aimed at overcoming all the barriers that are a great hindrance to them in their effort to trying getting health care. Therefore, the policy has been able to cover barriers like poverty, race, age as well as occupation as factors mainly posing a great danger. In addition, such barriers have been overcome in the policy. For example, better interpreters for the deaf have been employed in women hospital, more physicians with adequate knowledge on the issue of disabilities have been employed and accessible transportation has been provided to the disabled women. The issue of discrimination in the health centers based on race has been taken care of. Also, due to the fact that the women who are disabled requires more medical attention compared to the ones who are not disabled, then more care givers and centers for the disabled women have been put in place. It should be noted that disability is one of the factors that interfere with employment. A non-disabled person is likely to be employed ten times than a disabled person. With that in mind, the issue of poor healthcare access as well as the gender and race added, makes the matter even worse (Hauge, 209). Therefore, the policy on the medical access of the disabled women enables such a barrier to be overcome.

            Productive health care is another area that most disabled health care access rights have been violated. This because, it was discovered that most non-disabled women gained access to the reproductive healthcare compared to the disabled ones. Such healthcares include the cervix cancer screening and breast cancer screening. This brought about the need for a policy to address such problem (Braunwald, 87).


Such a policy is very important in the sense that even those women who are disabled have equal rights to gain access to health care. On top of that, those being such a large number in the population, their health are also so important for the sake of the health of the population at large. The need for an insurance cover is another area that disabled women’s rights were highly violated. This is because most insurance companies would deny a woman an insurance health cover on the basis of their disability. The policy has enabled such barriers to be overcome.
